Talk-Story is the eighth episode of the first season of Doogie Kameāloha, M.D., and the eighth episode overall. It aired October 27, 2021.
Synopsis[]
Lahela is touched by the love between an elderly patient and his new bride, and can envision a future with Walter. But Noelani forces Lahela to question the long-term viability of a teen doctor and a surfer/skater, encouraging her to accept an invitation to a poetry reading from a young college-bound hospital volunteer. When all-business Clara learns she has to schmooze with colleagues to win the Chief of Staff job, Benny encourages her to show them her fun side by teaching her to “talk story.”[1]
Plot[]
Lahela is excited when Walter comes to visit her at work during her lunch break. She tells him about the day she has had already, but he jokingly remarks that he cannot understand her "medical jargon" and in return, tells her about his day using equally complicated remarks. Lahela tells him that they do not have long but could take a walk, but she is force to abandon the lunch date when her patient throws a code blue.
Lahela rushes to the patients room with Charles and Noelani, she finds that the patient and his wife are making out. He has accidentally slipped his monitoring equipment which has thrown the code. The trio are equally embarrassed and leave the room. On their return journey, Lahela talks with Charles about hanging out with Walter and his friends, but remarks that she can't because she has to work. Charles offers to swap shifts with her that day so that she can do so.
Clara talks with Benny about the race for Chief of Staff and how Dr. Lee is excelling whilst she seems to be failing. Benny gives her advice and suggests she give out snacks and fruit in the staff room of the hospital. She believes this is a good idea but ultimately fails when she is unable to talk with the majority of the staff members; either because she doesn't know them or because Dr. Lee has already won them over.
Lahela and Steph hang out with Walter and his friends, but there seems to be difficulty in conversation. Whilst Walter's friends are interested in Lahela's career, they make numerous jokes about it and Lahela becomes uninterested in the conversation. Reporting back to Charles and Noelani, she remarks that they are underwhelming and gives off a vibe that she doesn't like them too much.
Brian talks with Kai about their agreement to make cookies together for the bake sale. Brian is on edge that Kai has not started baking, but Kai tells him that there is plenty of time and that he bakes for fun, not to make a profit or anything too serious. Brian is annoyed and decides to branch out on his own.
Meanwhile at the hospital, Charles, Noelani, and Lahela are hanging out when a guy heads over, telling Lahela about a poetry reading taking place later that day and asking if she would like to attend. When he has gone, she talks with Charles and Noelani about it and tells them that she is sure Walter will like to go with her. When she asks Walter, however, he laughs at her and remarks that he thought she was joking. The two end the conversation abruptly after Walter is rude to Lahela.
Benny and Clara attend the market stalls where Clara tries to recruit people to vote for her for Chief of Staff. She is disappointed, however, when she finds that her methods aren't working, but rather working against her. Meanwhile, Kai becomes annoyed when he finds that Benny has set up his own cookie stall and is selling cookies without him.
