Aloha - The Hello One is the first episode of the first season of Doogie Kameāloha, M.D., and the first episode overall. It aired September 8, 2021.
Synopsis[]
Lahela is eager to experience some of life’s firsts, but professional responsibilities interfere.
Plot[]
On the morning of her sixteenth birthday, Lahela Kameāloha surfs with her father at the beach. She thanks him for the surf, but remarks that they must hurry as she has her driving test shortly. The two are distracted when Lahela notices a guy at the beach who she is attracted to; she briefly converses with him and he tells her that he looks forward to going to the dance with her.
During her driving test, the examiner jokingly tells Lahela that she is driving too slowly and must speed up. They are distracted, however, when Lahela notices an accident on the sidewalk and immediately pulls over the vehicle to check it out. The man has a bleeding arm and a fractured hip cutting off the circulation to his right foot. Lahela asks the police men to aid her in fixing the mans leg before it will need to be amputated, but they are reluctant to do so given her age; it is revealed shortly after that she is a doctor when she produces her ID badge. She is safely able to restore blood circulation to the man's leg.
Later that day, Lahela is discriminated against by a patient due to her age. She tells the patient that she is a competent doctor, but he remarks that he will sue her nonetheless. Lahela, however, remarks that he has no jurisdiction nor cause to sue her, further remarking that she wanted to be a lawyer before she became a doctor. After fixing the man's leg and stitching it back together, he admires her work and tells her that he will not sue; she jokingly remarks that he has three years from now if he wants to change his mind.
Lahela is pulled away, however, by her mother, Clara Hannon, who also happens to be the chief of medicine at the hospital and therefore her employer. Carla tells her that the TikTok video she posted was not acceptable, but Lahela is reluctant to listen.
Following this, Lahela begins her rounds, visiting her favorite patient, Will. Lahela jokes that he is the only person allowed to call her "Doogie." Will gives Lahela advice about trying things for the first time and tells her to go out and enjoy the night whilst she is young. Shortly after, she is joined by numerous other doctors, one of which is the head of Cardiovascular Surgery, Dr. Lee. Lahela is taken by surprise, however, when Dr. Lee explains that they are trying to secure a heart transplant for Will. Lahela is forced to reassure Will that this is safe, however, despite her reservations.
Lahela is furious with Dr. Lee and the two talk to her mother, Clara. Clara tells the two that they are both correct, but Dr. Lee's opinion will stand due to his experience and this being the right fit for Will.
Whilst Lahela is recording for her vlog in her room, Steph enters and asks if she would think it is weird for her to ask out her brother. Lahela remarks that he will probably not go for her given her close relationship with Lahela, but Steph remarks that she will try anyway. Later that night at dinner, Steph tries to talk with Kai but he tells her that he will probably just go with friends. This makes the situation at dinner awkward. Furthermore, Lahela and her mother clash when she asks her mother if she can extend her curfew that night. Carla remarks that her curfew is late enough, but Lahela doesn't agree. The two get into a heated debate and Lahela storms off from the dinner table.
The following day, Carla talks with Lahela's father, and tells him that she thinks Lahela hates her. The two talk about the TikTok video the two made together.
Lahela tells Will that she will be there throughout his surgery, no matter when or where it is. The two talk further and Will tells her to enjoy her night at the dance. Lahela and Will get closer and closer at the dance and just as they are about to kiss, Lahela receives a call and is forced to rush to the hospital. Here, she finds Dr Lee who tells her that Will passed away and there was nothing they could do.
Lahela is heartbroken, but is comforted by her mother who arrives at the hospital, having been informed shortly after about Will's death. She tells Lahela of the first person she lost, and this comforts her. Clara explains to her that helping people is what's fulfilling about being a doctor, but losing a patient is always tough. Lahela realizes that she's not the only person that has to deal with things like this. The following day, Lahela changes her display name to "Doogie."
