Synopsis[]
Lahela accepts a medic job on Walter’s pro surf tour in Australia but Benny and Clara refuse to let their 16-year-old live with her boyfriend and leave her medical residency for the summer. As the Chief of Staff announcement nears, Lahela circumvents Clara’s authority, requesting a sabbatical, and Benny insists Uncle John should be discharged early for the family’s King Kamehameha Day potluck. Walter offers to skip his tour and Lahela musters the strength to do what’s right, even if it’s hard.[1]
Plot[]
Steph arrives at Lahela's house and climbs in through the window. She is surprised when Lahela tells her that she applied, and got accepted, for a medical placement on Walter's surf tour. She is having difficulties deciding how she will approach the situation with her parents, however. Shortly after at the breakfast table, Steph tries to bring the topic up, but is quickly shut down by Lahela who tells her it is too soon.
Later at the hospital, Clara visits Uncle John to find that he has numerous guests by his bedside. She tells him that his surgery went well and that his condition is improving but that he cannot leave the hospital yet. After leaving his room, she bumps into Dr. Lee and the head of the hospital board, and a difficult conversation ensues where Clara is certain that she has lost in her race to Chief of Staff.
At home, Benny and Clara are surprised when they find that Lahela has arranged a model-UN where she talks about the development of Australia. After a while of talking, Lahela asks her parents if she can take a two-month break from medical school to spend the summer there with Walter for his surf tour. She is quickly shut down by the two of them, who tell her that she must remain in Hawaii and is too young to spend the summer alone.
Lahela is furious at her parents and, the following day, tells Charles and Noelani that she must find a way to tell Walter that she cannot go. Upon talking with Walter and seeing his excitement at the prospect of spending the summer with him, she cannot bring herself to tell him and instead lies, telling him that she cannot wait to spend the summer in Australia with him.
Benny, Kai, and Brian become concerned when Benny believes that he cannot uphold their family tradition alone whilst Uncle is in the hospital. In an elaborate plan, the three try to sneak Uncle out of the hospital but are eventually caught when Clara finds something amiss. Uncle is taken back to his room and Clara tells Benny that it is his time to step up for their family.
Whilst meeting with Mr. Hsiao, the head of the board, he accidentally lets slip to Clara that they will be one doctor down soon given Lahela has asked the board to grant her a two-month break from the programmed. Clara is furious and goes to confront Lahela about the move. Lahela tells her that she is no longer a kid therefore Clara cannot make decisions about her. With this, Clara evokes that she is her boss and therefore declines her request. With this, Lahela hands over her ID badge and remarks that she quits.
Whilst Lahela receives numerous remarks from colleagues about how she will be missed, Walter is concerned when he hears the news and tells her not to give up her passion for him. Walter tells her that he will not go on the tour but will stay with her for the summer given that he can always apply the following year; the two kiss and embrace.
Preparing for the thanksgiving celebration Clara surprises Benny and the others when she brings by Uncle, citing that she discharged him under her care. As the celebration begins, Lahela attends with Walter, whilst Benny and Clara attend together. Kai tries to pluck up the courage to talk with Steph, but is too shy in the end and buckles it. Clara pulls Lahela to one side and tells her that it is finally time for her to make her own decisions and that she can go to Australia. Lahela tells her that she won't be going and asks if she can have her job back. Clara and Benny talk and Benny questions whether her actions have cost her the position as Chief of Staff; she remarks that they probably have, but it was worth it.
The following day, Clara is stopped by the chair of the board at work, who asks why she did what she did, remarking that it goes against strict policies. He furthers, however, that the policies were written by lawyers and not doctors and tells her of a time his father was in hospital. He tells her that she did the right thing and names her as the next chief of staff.
